About Di Dieter
Di Dieter is a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer and former IDC Staff Instructor with over 45 years of instructional experience.
He has taught at numerous locations over the years, including 32 years at the Flushing YMCA and 33 years at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Did one of the first programs for the physically challenged, Cerebral Palsy in 1976.
Since 2007 he is the lead Instructor at Long Island Scuba. Where on a regular basis he conducts Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster Courses. Di also provides individual and group private lessons.
Di has also been an instructor for the YMCA Scuba Program, NAUI, and CMAS certifying agencies. And served as N.Y. YMCA Scuba Commissioner, and later Field Representative.
In the early 70's served as a Board member and then as Institute Director responsible for testing and certifying New YMCA Instructors. During this time there were 2 notable persons still very active in the diving community, Ed Smith and David Tilzer.
Also, he was the instructor who worked with and prepared, certified at all levels till she became an Instructor, Women's Diving Hall of Farmer member Randi Eisen.
Over the past 45 years has certified at all levels approximately 5000 persons.
Di has run fun, safe, and successful dive group trips to numerous dive destinations over the past 42 years. 38 trips to Bonaire alone. And with many repeat persons. As he has said over the years, " I don't send you there, I take you there "
Did some commercial diving in the "early years'. Operated a dive boat here in N.Y. Operated a dive business and dive boat in the British Virgin Islands. Owned and operated a dive shop in Brooklyn for 11 years.
Di has been interviewed and/or featured in several articles in both The New York Times and News day where the subject matter was diving on some level.
Also, did diving video segments for FiOS local news.
When Beach 8 St. was possibly being taken away from the diving community by private interests, Di did news segments for Channel 2 and Channel 5, World Radio Network, and several local community papers, to make the public aware of the uniqueness of the dive site.
He was also spokesperson for a group of concerned divers, several years ago, that met with Helen Marshall, Queens Borough County President , and attorneys for the 9 St, development group. As a result of that meeting, Ms. Marshall had them incorporate into the development agreement, that ... DIVERS would always have access to the waters of B. 8 St for diving. We convinced her that B. 8 st. was a great asset and natural resource for the Borough of Queens.

Numerous certificates and letters from PADI. Some letters that were written to them by students in appreciation for the training that they felt he gave them. Updates and workshops. Also certificates of appreciation for certifying over 100 students, a year, several years in a row. Some after his 70th birthday !
